The character I chose is Scythe Goddard. He is intolerant, quick tempered and very powerful. He shows his intolerance when Rowan won't kill the volunteers, he gets mad and makes him kill them. He is powerful because he is the most influential new guard scythe.

Scythe is a tragedy because the main character Rowan losses everything. His love interest Citra is separated from him by Goddard when their mentor is proclaimed dead. His mentor Scythe Faraday is proclaimed gleaned. His friend Volta also gleans himself out of hatred to what he has become. The book is also a quest because Rowan sets out to try to stop Goddard from forcing him to fight Citra.

The way the author portrays Rowan is indirect. One example of this is when he helps Kohl Whitlock through his gleaning at the start. He is told it will hurt but does it anyway to make Kohl more comfortable. But later in the book Rowan changes to a ruthless killer. One example of this is a test gleaning. When others have a hard time gleaning someone Rowan gleans before the instructions are over.

The antagonist of Scythe is Goddard. Goddard is part of the New Guard. Goddard wants to eliminate the Old Guard and preform mass gleanings which is the biggest controversy in the Scythedom. This is character vs character because Rowan must fight Goddard after Goddard makes him his Apprentice.

Scythe's setting takes place in the far future in MidMerica which is now America. It also takes place partly In South America for a brief period of time. Rowan the main character reacts to the social context by killing the head of the New Guard Scythe's that are corrupt and kill with no purpose.
