Anne Frank, a young teen in hiding during the world war, keeps an extremely detailed diary of her life in the "Secret Annex".

I predict that things will get harder for Anne as her writings continue.

The author uses a metaphor to describe her living space. She compares the atmosphere as dull and dreary by saying, "The atmosphere is so oppressive and sleepy and as heavy as lead" (Frank 113). This exemplifies her feelings about the mood in the secret annex. She explains how saddening the atmosphere is. Obviously, it isn't actually as heavy as lead. She is using a metaphor to describe the mood in her home.

In The Diary of a Young Girl, Anne has to keep herself occupied during her time in "The Secret Annex" with things like Mythology. This has made her determined to learn saying, "They think here that it is just a passing craze, they've never heard of an adolescent kid of my age being so interested in Mythology. Well, then, I shall be the first (Frank 75)!
