One scene in the book is Mahmoud crossing the border into Germany from Austria. This is in 2015 and they are Syrian refugees who are trying to seek asylum, The border is welcoming and the people there are kind. They are walking with a large group of other refugees trying to get to Germany. He is with his family and he feels good that he gets there.

The book is told from third person limited. While it does say why some people other than the main character do things, it is never by going into their thoughts like how omniscient would have it, instead they use physical clues or dialogue. For example, in one paragraph it says that the bullies wanted to beat up the main character, but we are not told why.
