Big Misunderstanding in the last several pages and she's now marrying the other brother?? oh lord. This book is wearing me out.

The abusive behavior has apparently been explained away by a heart to heart. The MMC has been a drunk, gambling, whoring, wife beating bastard from start to finish.

So much forced drama in the last 100 pages. A kidnapping by the Baron (a character from ages ago) and the h was forced fed laudanum at an opium den then her soon to be mother in law travels from timbuktu to save her. So much unnecessary ott wtfuckery

I'm feeling at a loss. I'm not sure if this is suppose to be romantic right now? I'm probably going to end up rating this book high because it's been one hell of a story, but this is a harrowing story of an abusive relationship. Not a romance.

This is so dysfunctional and abusive. No contemporary author would have the balls to publish this kind of story today.

Yet another similarity to Funny Girl (I think): Fanny--I mean, Rhawnie, is thinking of going ahead and getting married despite already being married to her first husband (they've been separated). Iirc this is similar to Nicky Arnstein. I think he struggled to divorce his first wife so he could marry Fanny? Or some sort of drama around that.

Fanny is finally headed for Broadway--I mean Rhawnie is finally headed to her debut Opera performance in America

So unbeknownst to Rhawnie she just had sex with her husband's brother in his mother's bed. This book is crazy.

I really don't see how Seth is redeemable at this point. He's worse than his dad in Savage Surrender.

Scratch that this is even worse than the sad part of Funny Girl. The marital fights are so much uglier. JC. This guy is looking pretty irredeemable right now. I'm seeing lots of Funny Girl influences though like selling the beloved house, Fanny--I mean Rhawnie giving Nick -- I mean Seth her money. Rhawnie can sing too. Broadway isn't in this time period but I think she might sing for a living later on the book.

Ugh this emotionally feels like the sad part of Funny Girl right now (towards the end iirc) and I'm not even half way through the book. The marital discord rn is not fun to read.
