I had to pause mid-read tonight to double check the original publication date of this novel. 1953. Can that be correct? The descriptions of New Orleans, West Texas, and so far - Reno... wow! Post WWII America was a terrific playground & it must have seemed to those who straddled the dividing line between the straights & the crooks (or "alternatives" thereof) that "the yard went on forever" to quote Jimmy Webb.

I'm reading the Munsey's e-book edition of this.
Already a superior read compared to my most recently read Charles Williams novel - RIVER GIRL.
Then again this is about a professional gambler and part-time con artist... my favorite type of protagonist.
There's just something about the small time criminal element I find so appealing as depicted in the original Gold Medal paperbacks of the mid-50s/early 60s.
