This chapter was much improved than the last. Specifically I appreciated the discussion of the Appalachian subculture model vs colonialism model views of Appalachia. This chapter’s focus on the harm that capitalism has caused Appalachia by depleting resources, ravishing the lands, and forcing the Appalachian people to confirm to specific cultural norms was an important point.

I just finished Ch. 1. I started reading this work to learn more about Helen Matthews Lewis and her “mountain feminism” as has been coined by others. After reading Matthew Lewis’ thesis in chapter 1, I’m concerned about the erasure of black women in her work as she refers to “blacks” but focuses on black men and “women” but seems to be only talking about white women. Will update as I continue to read.
