I had a White knee-jerk reaction. "This is a teen high school story, maybe this was a mistake." And then I pushed it back, listened harder, and heard the beginnings of a complex story about a young woman's struggle to find her place in all these expectations about how she should exist as a Black person. This book has a lot to teach me, I'm ready.
