I'm actually listening to the audio book, so I'm not sure what page I'm on. It's a pretty mixed bag. Gilbert is at her best as an intimate story-teller, as when she recounts the stories of her grandmother, mother and friends. The sections that cover the history of marriage as a legal institution, statistics about marriage, or modernity's effect on marriage are dry, monotonous and not exactly news.
