“The study of Nature makes a man at last as remorseless as Nature” (56). With this quote, Dr. Moreau, a character infamous for his vivisection experiments on animals, justified his actions. He has created hybrid, creatures that are horrid to look at, and he feels that what he is doing is for the best for scientific purposes, and is simply part of human nature. Prendick, the protagonist, is not sure if this is right.

"My position was the outcome of such unexpected adventures, that I had no discernment of the relative strangeness of this". Prendick has been saved once again and is brought to an island with other scientists who are unsure of how to handle him. It is important to know from this quote that Prendick is a big adventurer, so he is readily able to adapt to a strange situation on a new island, and is ready for adventure.

This story starts up quickly, with the story of a man who was shipwrecked with his crew and nearly drowned. He was rescued by another ship, only to be sent back into the water a few days later. Edward Prendick, the protagonist, felt betrayed and hopeless, and he "prayed aloud to God that he would let [him] die" following the point where he was kicked off the ship that rescued him
