My advice that I would give to America is to be confident in her decision making. I would give her this advice because she’s always doubting herself when it comes to making a move with Maxon. Specifically, when they were both on the rooftop of the palace, in the rain, they shared an intimate moment that provoked America to say I love you, but she doubted herself, and decided not to say it.

In The One, everyone accepts their caste classification, and acts according to their rank. However, it’s dangerous to challenge the Caste System that divides the wealthy vs poor. Citizens are expected to be grateful for their position in the kingdom no matter how poor or rich they are. An example would be when an 8, the poorest, stole from a 1, the richest. The punishment for that man was life in prison.

The genre of this book is fantasy and romance. The fantasy aspects are tied with the fact that there’s a kingdom with a social hierarchy and a competition for girls of each of the social classes to marry the prince. The romance aspects come from the relationship between Maxon and America. They share many intimate moments that create a love story.

The symbolic archetype of this book is the safe rooms. Lately, there have been more rebel attacks on the castle, so in order to stay safe, the royals and ladies go into the rooms. This is the symbolic archetype because the safe rooms are always reoccurring. The rebels are attacking the castle constantly, so the protection rooms are considered a safe place. It tells how the kingdom in the story has its enemies.
