Johnny is in critical condition. He is badly burned and his back is broken/paralyzed from the waist down. Ponyboy was released from the hospital, practically unharmed, while Dally has to spend 2 or 3 days in the hospital. Next, Randy the soc talks to Ponyboy downtown, saying that he won't go to the rumble because he doesn't see the point. They see Johnny is the hospital and the boys plan for the rumble.

In the last two chapters, Dally took Ponyboy and Johnny to lunch and told them about what was happening with the greasers and socs, and Johnny was going to confess about the murder. Dally refused and made Johnny and Ponyboy go back to the church. The problem was, the church was on fire, and their were kids inside. Johnny, Pony, and Dally ran inside and saved the kids, then went to the hospital.

When Johnny and Ponyboy were at the park, the blue mustang came up and and the socs started to pick on them. One soc started to drown Ponyboy in the fountain when, out of nowhere, Johnny slit his neck and killed the soc. After that, Ponyboy and Johnny thought it would be a good idea to run away, so they went to Dally, got fresh clothing and a loaded gun and ran away to an abandoned church.

Ponyboy, Dally, and Johnny went to a drive-in theater in the last chapter. They met two soc girls, Cherry and Marcia, and Dally tried to pick on them, but to everyone's surprise, Johnny told Dally to get lost. Later, Ponyboy talks to Cherry about how Johnny got hurt and nearly killed by a group of socs, and Cherry says that not all socs are like that and there is troubles on both sides.
