Aaaahhh I haven't read this book in YEARS. I don't even know how many times I've read it, but I don't think I've done so since 6th or 7th grade.
Definitely credit this as my first love of Gothic, even if it is Gothic Lite.

Ah, now I remember why I hate everything else I've read of Burnett's - the author has no sympathy for her child characters and it really freaked me out.
Sure, Mary isn't the nicest kid, but she was emotionally neglected by her parents AND the only person who ever cared about her died and no one told her and THEN she was abandoned by every person in the household. I feel like she's earned some disagreeableness.
