So far, this textbook has proven to be surprisingly fascinating. While the first half covered conventional basics of writing such as argumentation and analysis, the later chapters are focused on more specific issues. For example, one chapter is written about poverty, while another may be exploring issues of modern racism. The book remains interesting, and the essays are both informative and well written.

Sor far, the book has focused not only on the practice of effective text comprehension but also on the value of going beyond conventional expository understanding when reading. Where other texts often place emphasis on simply comprehending the meaning of a passage, this book has focused on understanding and reviewing the text from the perspective of both an interested reader and a critical analyst.
