Knowing that he was a rake, she'd half expected him to attempt to seduce her, but that was ridiculous. This was not one of those horrid novels with a villain snatching a damsel in distress.

This made me laugh. I do feel like I would take this over a "precocious" five year old. Why can't they all just have dogs instead? :)

Seriously, I'd take a mischievous dog any day. I don't know, I generally don't like kids being used as foils, but I'll make exceptions. But teenagers? Oy. No thank you ma'am. I can just smell insta-family a mile away and that drives me insane. Were "stepson" "stepmom" titles even used back then?
I think "step" is ok to use in this time period, I don't think it became causal until 20th (?) century but I do know it appeared in the 1700s at least. And so with you on teenagers, replace them with a bologna sandwich.
