Phyllis Harrison Montgomery Meigs- How did Americans miss this story? I always wonder how Simon Schama finds these little gems. If you are a fan of American History, especially the transitional time between the Revolution and how we got into the Civil War, this is one great little story about one man's fight against corrupted big (American) government. Having done recent research in this time and these places myself, it's a riveting story of one man's fight for what he believes will be right and benefit mankind when he is gone. After finally getting back into Schama's poetic writing style, it takes the reader far away into distant places, completely and totally, bringing the smell of the gunpowder, the anger of indignation, and the sorrow of family divisions and loss in America's most terrible war directly to our present-day senses without resorting to overwhelming graphics.

Phyllis Harrison Hard to put down.
