In his new house Chris has to do a lot of things for his family. They still have not enough money and when Chris is 10, he starts a job as a gofer to support his family, and sometimes he really hates this job. His sister is a new mother and has to move to get away from Freddie. To be cool, Chris decides to steal but quickly learns his punishment is way worse than others because of the color of his skin.

The third chapter is about the life after his mother left him again. He lived by his uncle Willie and his aunt Ella Mae for the next three years. Chris lived without his sister. He remembered their time together. Chris did not know where she was, or if she died while she was in a detention home. He found out that his uncle Henry died and was devastated. At the funeral he saw his mom with a prison guard next to her.

So far, we find out that Chris’s stepfather, Freddie, is a huge drinker who often comes home late at night very drunk and aggressive. Chris begins to grow a huge hatred for him as he watches Freddie constantly hit and yell at his mother. When they find a way to get away, Chris’s mother goes back to him because she needs his financial support. Chris realizes he’s wants to be nothing like him in the future.

I finished the first chapter and it is about Gardner’s background. It starts with who took care of him as well as his brothers and sister. He speaks on where they grew up and also goes into detail about his mother who had died and talked about his father and stepmother. This chapter was more about how he grew up as a child.
