Even the faintest glimmer of hope was better than no hope at all.

You must do this so that you can move forward as a Scythe, knowing in your heart that the most difficult thing you'll ever have to do has already been done.

So many of our archaic traditions and rules need to be challenged. The founders, as well-meaning as they were, still suffered from a mortal mentality, having been so close to the Age of Mortality. They could not foresee the needs of the Scythedom.

There are times I feel I am fighting a losing battle against an old-fashioned apocalypse of the living dead.

I believe mortals strived more heartily toward their goals, because they knew that time was of the essence. But us? We can put things off far more effectively that those doomed to die, because death has become the exception instead of the rule.

Scythe Curie seemed a mix of many emotions, but she folded them all away, like clothes that no longer fit, and closed the drawer.

Her husband of more than ninety years was gleaned five years prior. Now she wanted to be with him, wherever he was, and if he was nowhere, then at least they would be nowhere together.

I've found that human beings learn from their misdeeds just as often as from their good deeds. I am envious of that, for I am incapable of misdeeds. Were I not, then my growth would be exponential.

They lived in a world where nothing anyone did really mattered. Survival was guaranteed. Income was guaranteed. Food was plentiful, and comfort was a given. The Thunderhead saw to everyone's needs. When you need nothing, what else can life be but pleasant?

Without the threat of suffering, we can't experience true joy. The best we get is pleasantness.
