Elie and his father get taken to Auschwitz and they are separated from his mother and sisters and never sees them again, he also witnesses people getting put in a fire pit and infants being thrown into fire pits and at the last moment elie and his father are going to die in the fire pit and the guards change their mind.

Elie survives the war, but unfortunately his father doesn't, his father dies from dysentery where the body rejects all fluids. Elie felt when his father passed it was somewhat of a relief because he was often told by prisoners and guards that it was every man for himself but he always choose to ignore them because thats his father he couldn't abandon him in such a place; though it occurred to many father and son's.

Elie is taken to a new camp called Buna and he is separated from his father. Many of the nazi guards are very nice to the young 10 and 12 year olds boys, which confuses Elie which he later learns that it was due to homosexuality. Which is strange because many people were killed for being Homosexual.
