A beautifully written and elegant story. A narrative poem in blank verse, it details a year in the village of Saugersville when the citizens awoke to find the outside world has vanished, leaving them totally alone in the wilderness of their "new normal." Written in 1938, and strangely attuned to the current time, it is a hauntingly lovely read. My fifth-grade teacher read it to us, and it still reverberates.
