Chapter 14 may be the longest chapter I've read in any book, ever. On another note, it feels like something of a betrayal that once the villain gets moving in this book, almost everything that came before -- the suspicious cop, the strained maternal relationships, the abuse, etc., etc. -- that all seemed to be developing toward something, all came to nothing.
