When Cassia cut up the poem Ky gave her, and let the wind carry the pieces away I think that it represented her letting go of Xander. She was hiking on the Hill with Ky, and he gave her the poem for her birthday. She quickly memorized it and then ripped it up and it drifted away. Xander was always more like a best friend to her, than a husband, and I think that Ky was another good excuse to let him go.

I think that Xander had a feeling about Cassia and Ky even before she built up the courage to tell him. The main reason i think this is that when Cassia told Xander about it, he didn't act surprised. This is why he must have seen it coming. Although he may have known, he was disappointed, probably because he didn't want it to be true. Also, he knew they were hiking partners, so they are alone together all the time.

I think that in a way, she wants her relationship with Xander to fall apart. This way, she won't feel guilty about thinking about Ky. Even though Society doesn't approve of it, and won't allow them to actually fall in love, its like a weight has been lifted off of her shoulders. Unfortunately for her, she will still be Matched with Xander, and there is nothing she can do to change that.
