I love it. I didn’t realize how intensely Walker writes (forgetting her short story I read recently). I was hooked from page one, horrified by the events of Celie’s stolen adolescence and the cruel hand of misogyny suppressing her every action.
But there’s hope. There’s hope in Olivia and Nettie and Harpo. Hope in the passive voice of Celie as she experiences true friendship, pushed to make her own choices.
