Each one clearly had a lot of thought put into him/her with a fully fleshed out personality and interesting traits. Their actions were at times unexpected (in a good way!) and this was true for the story overall; the ending was shocking and completely unanticipated, which made it all the more amazing.

From the moment the Hardscrabbles embark on their strange and humorous adventure, the reader becomes engrossed in their story. Narrated by one of the Hardscrabbles (we aren’t told which one), the story is told in a unique way, relaying the tale while adding personal asides to the reader that are often laugh-out-loud funny.

on eight side of road were a few houses in moderate states of disrepair.their own house was at the very end of the street. ironically, though, the cats never thought it was time to leave the hardscrabble house.inside the hallway, otto and lucia dropped their schoolbags and headed directly to kitchen,just as they always did,but the stopped short at the entrance
