Author's craft. The Jules Verne uses similes and metaphors to create an image in the readers head. "The waves were like monsters cowering over the survivors" (470). This is a simile because the waves are being compared to monsters.

Author’s craft. The author, Jules Verne, uses repetition of events to create intrigue. Many of the events seem to repeat. For example, when Cirrus Harding survived after almost drowning as a result of falling out of the hot- air balloon and survived, is similar to the near-drowning of Top, the dog.
