"On my way I stopped at the edge of the hole ,looking down into it. It was deep, and wide across..."(124. This hole symbolizes/is significant to Ruby and Jamie's relationship because they aren't that close. In addition, when Cora described Jamie to Ruby it wasn't that expressive therefore this is why Ruby feels the way that she feels. After all this moving houses and places is a big step for Ruby in her life.

A possible theme in lock and key can be accept yourself for who you are or "when life gives you lemons make lemonade". As in when good opportunities come make the most of them. For example,"She was laughing face flushed, as the photographer took another picture... Even if its not what we want, at least it's something. You know?". (368). This shows the theme because its nice how Harriet has this opportunity.

"Because I wasn't the same girl who'd run to that fence the first night, thinking only of jumping over it and getting away"(296) This quote shows how Ruby has changed her behavior and decisions and she is more controlled of her self and even if it's the biggest or smallest things that would happen she could still handle it and deal with that emotion.

"Certain things, however, were crystal clear. Like how it was strange..."(227). This quote shows how Ruby feels towards Jamie's attitude to her. Meanwhile, Jamie is just disappointed, one reason is because Ruby is still going to her same school instead of a amazing academy. I think the fact that Jamie doesn't really talk to Ruby and she knows how he feels towards her makes her feel sullen because she has to live w/ it.
