A constant theme in the book is ones shadow shelf. This shadow is a part of us that literally follows us and is our darker counterpart.

One of my favorite quotes from the book so far is,"From the era of earliest childhood, to conceal his innermost self behind a mask of conventional proprietary, the fundamental truth of his epigram can hardly be contested. I adore this quote because the author captures the truth about how many act according to society’s standards instead of being true to themselves.

The author does not shy away from describing the racism and prejudice against the Native Americans in the Colonel’s dialogue. It makes the characters more realistic and gives them flaws.

I personally relate to Poe’s character because he thinks of multiple outcomes when it comes to situations and considers all possibilities. I find that I have some of the same tendencies as him.

The author uses Roger Usher and his house to remind the readers about Poe’s short story named “The Fall of The House Of Usher” Words like dilapidated are used to reflect how Poe uses those words to describe the Ushers and their house.
