Chris McCandless is hitch hiking along a road when a truck driver stops to ask where he is going. Chris needed a ride to Denali national park. The truck driver, Jim Gallien agrees to bring him. Chris introduces himself as "Alex" instead of using his real name. Chris has very few items to survive out in the Alaskan wilderness. He has only a 10 pound bag of rice, non-waterproof boots, and minimal essentials.

Alaskan State Troopers had a difficult time identifying Chris McCandless’s body. But when the story ran in the paper, Jim Gallien was certain it was “Alex.” Gallien called police and described Alex. Police finally believed Gallien when they saw his name in Chris’s journal.

In "into the Wild", author Jon Krakauer compares McCandless to other explorers in the past. There was an apparent lack of sympathy towards McCandless as he arrogantly attempted to go into the Alaskan wilderness. The Alaskans feel as though McCandless is ill prepared for his trip, and doesn't know what he's up against.

Author Jon Krakauer tells of Chris McCandless's back ground. He graduated from college and wanted to do something with his life. His parents, Walt and Billie, disapproved of his decision but Chris didn't care. He was going to Alaska.
