Notebook three part one: The view of society as individuals and nothing more is actually quite interesting. Whilst due to his own fear of society he embraces this new idea in an almost naive way the fact that it is not society that ostracises people, but individuals is quite profound. ... Ostracised or despised by society but the fact that he despises himself as a "toad", in his mind. Any solace he finds is destroyed by himself. I would like more description but the lack of description also works as it shows that Yozo is so disenfranchised that he only notices his own gloom and own nothingness

The second Notebook. The constant fear at being found out, that he cant function in a way that humans supposedly should is brought to the fore by Takeichi. His search for an outlet, in its erratic nature shows his desperation. The way he uses women and in a way women use him encapsulates his loneliness and this loneliness is only penetrated by Tsuneko, but this tiny solace is drowned out by the inevitable engulfment
