Teresa Buczinsky Great question. I've seen research that suggests that when people see themselves as falling below average when they are competing with others, they give up so that they can tell themselves that they weren't trying. (That way they don't have to admit that they tried but still ended up in the bottom half.) I see this happen in my classes, too.
