The story starts off with Aly talking to her dad. They are talking about the latest trends at her university. One of Aly's friends made a hair product that would make your hair shining and easy to comb but, there is a side effects. It makes your hair blue. Aly's brother thinks she look bad in it but she thinks it looks good. Her family tells her to try to get the blue out before her mother comes to see her again.

Aly and Da are still talking. They are talking about her future place in the world. How marriage will give her a lot of good jobs. She wants to do something great like her mom, the King's Champion. Or her adopted who is a mage and is half goddess. Or even like her Da and Grandda who are spymasters. (In the book they refer to her dad as "Da" and her grandpa, Grandda.)
