(1) "The creature that was lurking somewhere in the castle, [Harry] thought, sounded like a sort of monster Voldemort – even other monsters didn’t want to name it."
- Wonder if its name's just "basilisk," or if it has a personal name?
(2) The enchanted car reminds me of Nymeria from "A Song of Ice and Fire". A domestic, set free, and turned wild.

Final Thoughts:
"The Chamber of Secrets," as a title, always felt like a misnomer. There's nothing really secret in there. Salazar Slytherin told everyone what it was built for, what he housed in there, how to open it, and what happens if it's opened. The only thing secret about it is its location, in which case it should be called "The Secret Chamber."

Thoughts:
(1) Myrtle: "'I was floating away ...' She looked dreamily at Harry. 'And then I came back again. I was determined to haunt Olive Hornby, you see. Oh, she was sorry she’d ever laughed at my glasses.'"
- That's just short-term thinking.
(2) Hermione's incapacitated, Ron stays behind. It was the reversed in the last book. They mirror each other.

Notes:
(1) Percy: "Ginny, er, walked in on me the other day when I was – well, never mind – the point is, she spotted me doing something and I, um, I asked her not to mention it to anybody."
- Percy should lock his door...
(2) I love how, despite personal differences, the teachers all encourage Lockhart to go monster hunting, to get him out of the way.

Notes:
(1) Fudge sort of treats Dumbledore like a nuclear weapon: better engaged at Hogwarts than loose in the world.
(2) Malfoy calls Hermione a mudblood: 'Let me at him,' Ron growled, as Harry and Dean hung onto his arms. 'I don’t care, I don’t need my wand, I’m going to kill him with my bare hands!'
- Fist fights seem an aptly muggle reflex response.

Notes:
(1) Harry: "But why’s she got to go to the library?"
Ron: "Because that’s what Hermione does ... When in doubt, go to the library."
(2) "[Harry] chose the same new subjects as Ron, feeling that if he was rubbish at them, at least he’d have someone friendly to help him."
- And with Hermione taking everything, it guarantees they're always together.

Notes:
(1) Ron: "If I’d sprouted whiskers, I’d take a break from work."
- Future Ron should shave often.
(2) If Hagrid was expelled in third-year, and that was 50 years ago, then he'd be 63 years-old in the present, Tom Riddle would be 65, and Dumbledore around 150. I wonder if it's genetics or a side-effect of magic use that makes wizards live so long.

Thoughts:
(1) Nice of Harry and Ron to return Crabbe and Goyle's shoes when they're done.
(2) Malfoy insults Hermione, Ron wants to punch Malfoy. It's a law of nature.
(3) Myrtle to Hermione: "Wait till everyone finds out you’ve got a tail!"
- This line was given to Ron in the film, but changed to, "Look at your tail!" Which, to me, sounds fairly risqué.

A few things:
(1) Nearly all of Ron's explanation to Harry about parselmouths is once again given to Hermione in the film.
(2) Another fun name introduced here is "Millicent Bulstrode," who is described very much like the striding bull her name evokes.
(3) Harry's gone and become Hufflepuff enemy number one. Bad move ... badgers are deceptively vicious.

Notes:
(1) "Dobby is used to death threats, sir. Dobby gets them five times
a day at home."
- The empty death threats give him thicker skin, ironically.
(2) "Hidden from the teachers, a roaring trade in talismans, amulets and other protective devices was sweeping the school."
- Sort of like trading contraband in prison... wonder how they're smuggled in?

Notes:
(1) Hermione's blind to Lockhart's incompetence. Ron's known all along.
(2) Harry: "D’you think I should have told them about that voice I heard?"
Ron: "No ... Hearing voices no one else can hear isn’t a good sign, even in the wizarding world."
- Another prudent Ron line said by Hermione in the film. Film-Hermione's given book-Ron's common sense!

Aoife - Bookish_Babbling wrote: "Tbh, I'd really rather see Arya & Nymeria reunited if it means we get the last 2 books 😅"Fair enough. Though if I had to bet money on it, I'd find it far more likely that J.K. Rowling would suddenly, out of the blue, decide to write a nonsense story about Ron finding his magic car, than George R.R. Martin releasing his last two books. That is to say, I don't find the latter likely at all. 🤷♂️🙂
Aoife - Bookish_Babbling wrote: "I totes see where you're coming from & deffo think you're on to something there 😎👍"Also, at more than ten year a book, even if the last one does come out, I doubt I'll care anymore. 🤷♂😅
That's fair, i was a latecomer to that series and only read them once the current 5 had already been released so my wait time has been a lot less & I already know I don't really want to reread them before the next 2 come out so we'll see if i finish the series or not 😅
Aoife - Bookish_Babbling wrote: "That's fair, i was a latecomer to that series and only read them once the current 5 had already been released so my wait time has been a lot less & I already know I don't really want to reread them..."It's exactly the same with me. I read them all after the fifth book came out, but that was still a really long time ago. I spent nine months doing an audiobook reread of the whole thing, and that'll have to serve going forward. I'm not doing another reread, it's a lot of time and effort for zero resolution.
Aoife - Bookish_Babbling wrote: "I found you while you were doing your audiobook reread. Such great insights in your updates 👍"Thank you very much, Aoife! I'm happy you enjoyed them. If there was one lasting benefit of that reread, it was that it led to meeting a lot of awesome bookish people like yourself 😄👍
You flatter me...and it is much appreciated 😂😂😂I do enjoy your rereads, the thoughts they provoke & obvs the great gif game 👍👏😎

I'm happy you enjoy them. I like to use gifs when I can, but it's rare to have a series where I'm able to do them daily. Besides Harry Potter, perhaps only The Hunger Games... which might be the one I do after this. With the limited space for status updates, it's always a trade-off between gifs and more commentary. Either way, I always max out my character limit :)
Aoife - Bookish_Babbling wrote: "Same bro same...it's always a juggling act for the wafflefests i produce 😅"Yes, it's always a struggle when you have a lot of things to say but no more room to say it. For me, being selective and concise about my points is an issue with reviews as well.
Your concise reviews are amazeballs! You know I am in awe of how you construct them! I could never stop the verbal vomit quick enough to trim down my gushfests that masquerade as reviews...heck this comment is longer than your awesome reviews!

Thanks! Often times, constructing my reviews is just matter of persistence: banging a square peg into a round hole until you get a round peg :)
Aoife - Bookish_Babbling wrote: "Lucky for us you've got it down to an artform 👍"Thanks! Though, most of the time it's just a consequence of repetition. It's like moving to a new city, at first you get lost a lot but then you eventually learn all the backstreets and shortcuts. I rarely venture down dead ends and rabbit holes anymore :)
Aoife - Bookish_Babbling wrote: "Lolz, you deffo mamage to paint a vivid picture with your words. Very clever 👍👏"Thanks! That's always the goal with reviews – status and comments as well 😁👍
You know, I never thought about the basilisk having a name. It should have had one, if even the monstrous spider had one
Annie wrote: "You know, I never thought about the basilisk having a name. It should have had one, if even the monstrous spider had one"Yes, though the only one who could have named it was Salazar Slytherin, and I don't know that he ever did, or thought about the monster beyond locking it in the chamber. The spiders might have a name for it, though if they did they're not saying. Makes you wonder what a thing like that eats, being alone in a chamber for a thousand years... probably rats and bugs.
You’re probably right. It does say spiders flee before them...does that mean they eat spiders?? Because somehow it managed to survive for so many years without killing people- and it doesn’t actually say anywhere that it eats people only that it kills. Myrtle was found dead. Although perhaps it wouldn’t say in what condition she was found, being a children’s book?
Annie wrote: "You’re probably right. It does say spiders flee before them...does that mean they eat spiders?? Because somehow it managed to survive for so many years without killing people- and it doesn’t actual..."I think it does mean it eats spiders. I'd think whatever would fit through drain pipes or cracks in the masonry enough to reach the chamber. The floor of the chamber is littered with the bones of small animals, so probably that extends to larger rodents like weasels, stoats and ferrets.
Though, perhaps being a magic creature and, on top of that, charged with waiting for the heir of Slytherin to release it, it is magically immortal and doesn't require sustenance? I don't know if it eats humans. Otherwise, all the people who it petrified would be dragged away for food. Alternatively, it may not be able to eat petrified things.
