“Very well, sign this release form” (Spiegelman 59). This was what one of the Nazis, portrayed as cats, said to Vladek. Up until this point, I thought that the Nazis were harsh, inhumane people who will do anything to rid all the Jews. However, the scene where they were letting the Jews sign a release form made me see them in a new light(still bad though, but not completely bad).

"It wasn't anymore families. It was everybody to take care for himself!" (Spiegelman 114). This shows how when in crisis, you can't rely on anyone for anything- not even our relatives. Everyone has to fight for themselves just like in real life. No one is ever going to do anything for you for free(and not expecting anything in return) except your parents and VERY close family.

“Each of us gets coupons for 8 ounces of bread a day, and a tiny bit... that’s all!” (Spiegelman 75). This quote shows how even the richest Jewish families are treated horribly, just because of their race. It does not matter how rich or poor you are, the Nazis do not care. In fact, they especially favor the rich since they can steal and keep the belongings of these Jews for themselves.

This is not necessarily a quote, but on page 12 block 5, we can see Vladek’s arm, with the number “175113” tattooed into it. I really like how Spiegelman used details to convey information rather than relying fully on conversations. The tattooed number lets the readers know that Vladek had been a Jewish prisoner, since the Nazis imprisoned Jews, tattooed numbers onto their arms, and forced them to do labour.
