Why does Professor McGonagall act like four students out of bed after curfew is some extraordinary and rare event? Students run around in the middle of the night all the time.

I never made sense for Harry and Ron to lie about how they ended up confronting the troll. Even if they had said they went looking for Hermione to warn her about the troll, Professor McGonagall would have still reprimanded them for not telling a prefect and going themselves.

Rereading this, it seems extremely odd that Dumbledore doesn't appear to know Quirrell is being controlled by Lord Voldemorte and that Snape is trying to stop Quirrell entirely on his own.
