I would compare my main character to anyone who doesn't fit in. I pick that because everyone wants to fit in and he has issues being intelligent and it is hard for him to know exactly what to say about his emotions and he is trying but sometimes can't because he doesn't know what to say. The connection is people who can't say what they feel emotionally and aren't the most intelligent but they work for it like he does

The setting is in a normal city, but in a college lab, bakery, and the college itself. The character didn't fit in at first because he was mentally challenged and not "smart", but now he had a surgical procedure and now he is "smart" and can fit in with the other smart people by having normal conversations and understanding emotions and such.
