Santiago receives two stones in exchange for giving some of his sheep. Urim and Thummim. The white stone, Urim, means 'no' while the black stone, Thummim, means 'yes'. This brings the theme of omens into the book. An omen is an event regarded as good or evil. These stones allow him to understand the good and bad omens of his life. So the whole idea of 'omens' adds to his central understanding of knowledge.

In this fantasy-genre novel, Paulo Coelho statted to bring the reader into the adventure while dropping subtle but significant themes throughout the book. After implied to find a valuable treasure by an old but wise man, Santiago begins his voyage. I wonder what miraculous experiences he will go through and what challenging dilemmas he will face.
