I have never spent so long actively reading a single book the first time. A Suitable Boy isn't geared toward a Western audience, there are no explanations, glossaries, or footnotes, so it's tough reading for me (an American with very little knowledge of Indian history, society, or culture).

As I work through my discomfort, I find an engaging multi-generational story that's teaching me a lot. Well worth the effort.
