In terms of water management, Australia increasingly resembles the "Anasazi" culture as bushfires twice the size of Belgium rages unchecked. The relatively well-populated parts are what James R. Lee would dub as "thin slice(s) within a larger inhospitable zone of existence". Untrammeled urbanization & water-intensive agriculture meant a small shift in climate could render desolate the existing habitable areas.
