The author is asserting that Indigenous culture is not hierachical, but through a system of complex roles each individual has a level of autonomy and interconnectedness that enables freedom and function. While i can't comment on this, I do wonder if this is what God intended with his creation and what the apostle Paul tried to explain so controversially in 1 Tim, 1 Cor etc and we have interpreted it hierachically...
