You got the neadanderthals, homo erectus 'upright man. erectus lived around for 2 million years, longer than us homo sapiens. you got homo soloensis, who lived in the tropics, and homo florensis, who got trapped on an island and had to evolve to become smaller coz the food was scarce.

Apparently 6 million years ago there was a great ape who gave birth to twins, one turned out to be the ancestor of all chimpanzees, the other was our great^20 grandmother.

So in the book he uses Human to refer to all the genus of Homo. First Homo evolved 2.5 million years ago in east africa. They spread out to North Africa, Europe and Asia.

Part 1: The Cognitive Revolution:
Chapter 1: An animal of no Significance.

Three important revolutions: Cognitive, Agricultural, and Scientific.

Animals are the same species if they tend to mate with each other. Species with a common ancestor are bunched together under a heading genus. E.g. cats, lions, fall under the genus panthera.

Humans are also part of a genus, called the great apes.
