In the novel, Cassie is beginning to have deeper connections with employees at the prison. Her dad is very busy all the time, and has no time to spend with Cassie, but Cassie try’s to just ignore it. I connect to Cassie. Cassie has lost Mother, even though I have not lost my mom or dad, I still have lost some connections with them just like Cassie she lost connections with her mom.

She creates a strong friendship with the prison trustee Eloda.A question asked by Cassie is “How do you be a child to a mother you never knew”? (15).This is significant because clearly Cassie doesn’t have a mother, she just has a father, that works all day, and is almost never around.
