I had set this down, because I found the last selection hard to read. It wasn’t very structured, jumping around in time and subject. It was more of an elongated religious testimony, and praise for various people that helped the author. I have finished it up now though. The part I liked about this last section was that the individual voice of the author was prominent and interesting.

Lucy Delaney’s story is written in more flowery language than the previous stories. Still very interesting, I liked best when she was describing the events of her and her mother’s lives.

My goodness! Read the first section by Annie L. Burton, which begins with “The memory of my happy, carefree childhood days on the plantation with my little white and black companions is often upon me.” And goes on to cheerfully and matter-of-factly describe whippings, hangings, hunger, abandonment, and a custody battle! - and those were the carefree days!
