At the beginning of chapter 4, the author wrote "Nolan and I threw everything we had at those stupid fish" (Wallace 18). This quote shows that the characters are still young. They are still throwing things to hit the fish just for fun and calling them stupid. Adults won't do this because they would do and say other things that hat would be worse.

The quote I liked was "No neighbors so close you couldn't even burp without the guy next door calling out, 'Excuse you'." I liked how the author used the metaphor of burp to emphasize the context that each house is very quiet and far from each other.
