It 'troubled' Woolman 'to perceive the darkness of their [enslavers'] imagination.' He never faltered in shooting back, in his calm, compassionate way. No one is inferior in God's eyes, he stressed."

p 17 "St. Paul introduced, in the first century, a three-tiered hierarchy of slave relations -- heavenly master (top), earthly master (middle), enslaved (bottom)." This reminds me of the argument for the wife's subjugation for the husband - also from Paul.
