I recently discovered Pearl S. Buck's books. A lot of her novels are based in Chinese and Asian cultures. Although her books are fictional, they are well researched.
This book begins with the story of Orchid (Yehonala), who has been chosen as concubine to the emperor of China. I learned that she is of Manchu descent (Manchu being distinct from traditional Han Chinese). We follow her story in the Forbidden City.
