Bethany's mom calls back on Myrlie's landline and then the power goes out so Bethany get scared and gets mad at Myrlie for having a landline. They also a glimpse of Van Dynes car outside the window.

In this portion of the book, nothing really happens. Bethany finds a letter on one of the papers her dad sent her. It says that he is being hunted and he cant picks her up and that the money he sent was Elizabeths college fund. They look up his many identities and they find out he worked for a guy that went to prison. They are guessing that thats the guy chasing Bethany's dad.

Bethany learns she is a clone of Elizabeth. Her parents did this by taking Elizabeth's genes and adding them to Bethany. They also tried to raise Bethany like them. Bethany's dad sent a bunch of forged birth certificates and 10,000 dollars to his daughter and Myrlie to be safe. Bethany has many different identities but she just figured out she had different identities. A man tried to give Joss and Bethany a ride.

Bethany finds out Elizabeth was her sister and she finds out they had different last names. She watches a VCR tape of Elizabeth and Joss playing when they were little. She also meets Joss her cousin the Minister.

At the start of the book, Myrlie (the main character) is talking about her mom always crying everywhere and she also says it didn't use to always be this way. Then she gets dropped off at her aunt's Myrlies's but she doesn't know Myrlie is her aunt because her parents never told her. She tries to call her parents after they leave but the call says the service has been disconnected. She doesn't know where she is.
