Leah's Dad: Sometimes we have to do things that people don't like because it's what's best. That's what it means to be a grown-up.

Jasper: Sometimes, fighting sadness is worse than the sadness itself, because you just can't win. And at those times, you play the sad game. Which is just trying to let yourself be sad. To be okay with being sad.

Leah: It was hard to know exactly who was lying, and exactly about what. Which was worse: a lie or a secret?

Leah: It's funny how you can be not lying and also not telling the truth in the same moment.

Leah: I wasn't exactly sure why I'd done it ... because it had been in me to do. Because there was a broken little place inside me. A crumpled piece of paper I couldn't straighten out. Because I was tired of everything being wrong with everyone I'd known all my life.

Jasper: You can't tell anyone about me or this place. Nobody at all.
Leah: I wouldn't want to. I like it like this. Just us. A secret.
Jasper: This isn't a game. We aren't playing Narnia or Hogwarts. This is my real life. It would be bad for a lot of people if anyone found me here.

Jasper: My situation is ... more complicated than I can explain.

Leah: It isn't often you see a grown-up woman run down the street when they aren't wearing yoga pants and ear buds.

Leah: There were too many pieces to the story, and I couldn't quite take it all in or make sense of it.

Leah: You know how sometimes you have backup friends? People who you hang out with when your real friends are gone? ... Someone to fill in the gaps ...
Jasper: Sometimes it feels like my life is all gaps.
