The people in New Orleans seem to be categorized as two different social classes; the rich and the poor. For example, when Charlotte's uncle saw Josie in the Quarter he immediately assumed she was poor and that she wanted his money too when she asked for a college letter of recommendation. Because of these two different social classes. everyone thinks that Josie isn't able to go to college outside of New Orleans.

I notice that while Josie has really big dreams, she can't accomplish them because she can't afford to get herself out of New Orleans. But Joise still tries to stay away from her mother's business and find opportunities for herself. From this, I can tell that Josie is very determined to lead a better life than her mother. Also, I notice that the author adds jokes between Patrick and Josie to add comic relief.
