Now I'm learning how the switch to synthetic materials in WW2 made it possible for the U.S. & Europe to give up their colonies. When you can synthesize the rubber your society needs to keep running, you don't have to go to war to keep supply lines open to the tropics. Amazing.

I knew some of this stuff already, but there's a lot I didn't know. It really changes your perspective on America's place in history when you understand all the fuckery we've gotten up to in the pursuit of territory. The Philippines' perspective on the world wars is particularly eye-opening.
