So here's a prime example of one of the things that bugs the hell outta me since book one.

Every slightest bit of detail WILL BE retconned when it is convenient to do so. Pietyr's been comatose the entire time, but now that he's in Arsinoe's hands, how do we justify him being able to pass on information/knowledge that he SHOULDN'T be aware of?

Correct, it wasn't a curse, it was a plot device.

Easy! Just explain in one line how it turns out he's been conscious (if completely paralysed) for the past couple of days! Even though this would be inconsistent to MANY facts, the most recent one being that just before Pietyr woke up, Arsinoe's seer had tried peering into his mind and heard nothing but the dead queens' wailing. IMPLYING that there was nothing there to hear/see.

To be honest, there’s a whole lot of nothing-happening, so far. That, and just a bunch of characters talking about things we already know. Oh, and discussions about what jewels to wear with what clothes.

Then it opens up questions like: once the dead queens leave for another host, what if Katharine simply refuses to let them back in to her own body? Would they be able to force themselves in, if one of the rules to "switch" hosts was that the person needed to be either willing or extremely weak?

Conclusion: Convenient plot device is convenient. Except it isn't when you actually explore it deeper.

Like, if Katharine had just TALKED to the dead queens earlier, maybe the whole Pietyr fiasco could've been avoided? Certainly HE would have been only too happy to occasionally act as a "temporary host", if anything to at least give Katharine a break now and then.

SO.

After all the sweat and tears from the last book, where we were led to believe that getting the dead queens out of Katharine's body was oh-so difficult and virtually impossible to discover, let alone execute, it turns out . . . . . . that they had THIS option all along.

OH MY GARGOYLES!
Even Madrigal’s NEWBORN SON now has a “life-defining” nickname: CURSEBREAKER! Seriously?? He hasn’t even done anything yet, he gets the nickname for literally being BORN! Book, why are you SO OBSESSED with giving people nicknames??? You get a nickname, You get a nickname, ERRYONEEEE GETS A NICKNAAAAME!!

*yes, my sanity is slowly depleting because of this

If everyone has a supposedly awe-inspirint nickname, it diminishes the effect of historical nicknames at all. If we have a Blue Queen, an Undead Queen, a this queen and a that queen, such titles lose any authority or context at all.

They are supposed to be special and given sparingly, after a great feat or singular characteristic. It’s not special or singular if everyone has one.
