This anthology is formed of five books, of which I have completed the first two: presumably the longest two given the maths. ‘The God of the Gongs’ being unreadably racist has soured me a little on this collection, which is a shame as I was very much enjoying it; I will come back to the remaining three books at some point.

Less than 200 pages to go. Possibly time to read something else for a bit, but the last book’s worth of stories were a pleasure after fish-out-of-water USA and South America voyages (presumably written for money). Still a bit more racism than I’d like, although at least it’s contained in the dialogue of unsavoury characters, and Brown is increasingly the voice of Chesterton in long speeches.

These stories are better when they’re faintly mystical and set in obscurely peculiar parts of Britain; the ones in the US and South America (settings perhaps chosen for commercial reasons) ring less true.

Picked this back up after breaking for Fitzgerald. Oddly the third book in the collection is atrociously edited in the Kindle edition, with misplaced headings and typos everywhere.
